Under California law (B&P §7159.5), the down payment on a home improvement contract is limited to 10% of the total contract price or $1,000, whichever is less. Subsequent payments are tied to specific completion milestones detailed in your written contract. You will also receive a Preliminary Notice regarding mechanic’s lien rights (Cal. Civ. Code §8200).
